I-190 is a spur off of the New York Thruway (I-90) providing access to Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Canada. The first section is an extension of the Thruway known as the Niagara Thruway. It runs along the Niagara River through Buffalo. North of the city, it passes through Grand Island, an island surrounded by the Niagara River. The South Grand Island Bridge carries the Niagara Thruway over the river to the island, and the North Grand Island Bridge carries it back to the mainland. Historically, the Niagara Thruway was a toll highway like most of the Thruway system, but the only tolls remaining are at the two bridges. Tolls are charged entering the island but not leaving it.
North of Grand Island, the Niagara Thruway ends. The remainder of I-190 is known as the Niagara Expressway. It passes through Niagara Falls and ends at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, which crosses the Niagara River to Canada. On the other side of the bridge, the highway continues as ON 405.
